Chapter 2

Family Ties

Let's dive into the tangled web of family dynamics, where things aren't always as peachy as they seem. Picture this: me, a feisty six-year-old, already locking horns with my grandma. Arguments were like second nature to us, a constant backdrop to my childhood. But there's one memory that's seared into my brain—a day when things reached a boiling point. She spat in my face during a heated exchange, and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I lashed out, only to be restrained by my father. After that, I cut ties with her completely, even as she lingered around for another three and a half years.

Now, about her passing... She met her end in a car accident. Yeah, "fortunately" might sound callous, but hear me out. By then, we had already packed our bags and moved to New York. Even if I had been there, I doubt I would've attended her funeral. Harsh? Maybe. But growing up in a toxic environment tends to harden you.

Adding insult to injury, I seemed to be the family's favorite punching bag. No matter what I did, I couldn't shake off the title of the most disliked cousin. It left me questioning everything, wondering what I had done to deserve such animosity. The phrase "if you have trouble with everyone, maybe everyone isn't the trouble" often crossed my mind, stirring up a storm of confusion and frustration.

But you know what? Life's too short to dwell on the negativity. We can't choose our family, thought it was very toxic but we can choose how we react to their antics. And as I navigated the tumultuous waters of familial strife, I learned that sometimes, the best course of action is to forge your own path, regardless of the obstacles in your way.
